Due to the overwhelming Emails and phone calls interested in our Gold Exploration outing we have decided to do a small article on Private land vs Crown land. If you live on Vancouver Island and are interested in Exploring for minerals you will either be accessing Crown land or private land and anyone interested in Exploring for minerals on Crown land or Private land you must hold a free miners Certicate which then gives you the right to enter onto Crown or Private land to search out minerals and stake a claim if you so desire. Timberwest (Couverdon Realty Group) holds almost all the land south from Campbell River so if you plan on entering onto their lands you must first hold a free miners certificate and secondly  provide the Private land owner with a Section 19 form notifying them that you plan to access their Private Land to search for minerals. If you plan on entering Crown land you only need to hold a free miners certificate to search for minerals and stake a claim, If it`s Private Land there`s a little more to it but it can be done. As for who owns the land, Timberwest (Couverdon Realty Group) owns the Surface rights and the Crown owns the Subsurface.

Although landowners hold title to property, it should be understood that their Certificate of Title rarely includes what lies beneath the surface. In British Columbia as in the other Canadian provinces, private surface does not include mineral rights. The Government of British Columbia owns and may dispose of subsurface rights to most lands in the province.
